Keep it Simple

You don’t need to add a special routine to clean your window coverings. You can clean most shades and blinds while you’re doing your regular household tidying up to prevent dust, pollen, pet dander and hair, and any other particles from settling in on the surface. While you should clean your window fashions regularly, a deep cleaning is necessary only once or twice annually. Some window coverings are machine washable but should be washed using cool water and the delicate cycle. Our advice is to read the care instructions carefully before machine washing. If you’re unsure how to care for your Hunter Douglas shades or drapes, don’t hesitate to call one of our window treatment specialists.

Drapes

We like to make our lives as easy as possible when we’re at home, and we’re sure you do, too. You can stay on top of your Design Studio™ Side Panels & Drapery by giving the panels a gentle shake each evening as you close them. This activity will release particles from the day, so they don’t adhere to the fabric. We recommend using the brush attachment on your vacuum to clean the front and back of your drapes about once a month, paying particular attention to the bottom where dust and grime are most likely to collect. If you’re extra motivated, you can also take your drapery outdoors to shake off any dust and freshen them.

Cellular Shades

Your Duette Honeycomb Shades are a breeze to clean, literally, with the cool air setting on your hair dryer. You can also use your vacuum’s brush attachment with low suction and a damp sponge or cloth with a mild detergent like dish soap to spot clean any smudges. Avoid performing thorough cleanings too frequently, as this can cause the pleats of your shades to relax.

Sheer Shades

You can care for your Silhouette® Window Shadings similarly to honeycomb shades. Exercise care with the delicate fabric when removing dust and dirt. You can spot clean your sheer shades using a damp sponge and mild detergent but make sure you follow with a damp sponge and clean water, then dry with a soft cloth to prevent any residue buildup.

Wood & Faux Wood

The charm and sophisticated style of wood and faux wood blinds and shutters is easy to maintain with regular light cleaning. Parkland® Wood Blinds can be wiped with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any surface debris. For added convenience, use a mitt to clean both sides of the slat at once. Remember that natural wood is susceptible to moisture damage, so try to use dry cleaning methods when possible.

Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters are a wood alternative that offers more flexibility regarding upkeep. Routine dust removal is all you’ll need to do most of the time, but you can use a damp cloth or liquid cleaner for sticky fingerprints and other stubborn marks.
